"FILMAGE" HOSTED BY MARK HOPPUS

If you know your punk rock history, then you already know that the Descendents were the pioneers that influenced the genre as you know it today. And like every band, it all started with a couple friends in their parents' garage learning to make mistakes and make music.

We here at HMNIM are huge fans, and when the opportunity came along to be a part of this movie, we jumped at it. Now, Mark is already in the movie as they interview him about the influence that the Descendents had on him, but where could we fit in? Sure, we could re-edit the entire film and use the latest CGI technology to drop ourselves into the movie's key scenes (more thought went into that than you probably know). But in the end, we felt the best way to be a part of the film, was to host our own special screening of FILMAGE here in San Diego with our friends Vannen Watches

We'll be talking about this more as we get closer to the 21st. Don't wait until then to get your ticket as all 3 shows are expected to sell out. And did we mention that there will be an exclusive HMNIM X Descendents tee? Oh there will be, and you'll be super bummed if you don't get one.

FILMAGE Synopsis: Long before Green Day and Blink-182 inflicted punk-rock's puncture wound on the map of mainstream music, the Descendents were in a garage concocting the perfect mix of pop, angst, love, and coffee.
FILMAGE: The Story of DESCENDENTS / ALL follows band leader/drummer/square-peg Bill Stevenson and his "caffeinated retardedness" as he pushes his rotating door of bandmates to "achieve ALL," his philosophy of going for greatness at all costs. Stevenson is a force to be reckoned with, proving that not even a grapefruit-sized brain tumor can keep him down.
Interviews with the band, along with Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Mark Hoppus (Blink-182), Mike Watt (Minutemen), Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion) and many more reveal the story of a band — if not THE band — responsible for pop-punk as you know it.

GENIUSES, FORGET ABOUT THE IPHONE7 AND CURE CANCER ALREADY?

Our friend and recent collaborator Rich Simmons told us about this charity called Teens Unite Fighting Cancer. Being a teen is tough enough on its own. Trying to fit in, staying on top of what's cool, working out if that person likes you or not, and that's just your average Tuesday. And then pile onto the stress of all that, "Hey buddy, you got cancer", is mind blowing. There are fully functioning adults that can't handle that sort of news, for a teen, it's pretty much the worst thing you are ever going to hear, and they haven't even had the misfortune of failing their driver's test yet.

Teens Unite was co-founded in 2007 by Karen Millen OBE and Debbie Pezzani. Six years later they remain the only charity in the country (UK) that provides help for teens during this time. Every day, 6 teens between 13-24 are told they have cancer. Teens Unite's main aim is to get teens together as often as possible in a fun-filled environment giving them a chance to talk to each other and gain strength from realizing that they are not alone in their battle.

We couldn't think of a better charity to get involved with. If you want to get involved, they are always looking for volunteers to help, or maybe you know someone who has cancer that may not even know that Teens Unite exists. You can now spread the word? Life is short enough as it is, you are never going to regret helping someone along the way.

I'M SCARED

Do you like photos of orcas turning into ducks with octopus arms morphing into celestial planets in space?  Well, you probably would, but unfortunately they doesn't exist in our universe. Lucky for us, they DO exist in the mind of Greg "Craola" Simkins.  He paints in an amazing combination of graffiti and photorealistic surrealism that will take your fragile grasp on the real world and smash it into a billion pieces. (Originally my computer autocorrected that last sentence to "...smash it into a billion pies," which is just awesome.  Maybe even better.) Anyway, Craola is turning his ideas into a stop-motion film, and you can be part of it.  The title is "I'm Scared," and here's the synopsis: Big Brother shares with Little Brother all the frightening things that inhabit the world at night as they try to go to sleep. Small concerns grow into spooky spectres as Big Brother's imagination takes over and their bedroom becomes a playground for monstrous creatures of all types. So yeah, basically it looks to be a great project. And like I said before, you can be part of it.  There's a kickstarter link you can click on right here

Here's a video of Craola in his studio, painting one of the very characters in the film.  Art is cool.

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS

Nothing makes us happier than seeing someone follow their dream. Whether that dream is to learn to walk again, or converting your car into a 1980's TV replica. It is the latter that we are talking about today. Now we aren't going to tell you that Knight Rider was the best show ever, it was alright, it had its moments, and it had David Hasselhoff. But the real star was K.I.T.T. the talking car, the acronym KITT stood for something but who has time to find out that sort of information? Not us. Moving on, this post is about doing what you love and seeing it through.

Chris Palmer is an inspiration to all of us that have a dream but might be a little scared of what others might say about it. Dreams by their very nature are silly and nonsensical, but making a dream a reality is the highest calling and greatest achievement one might do in their lifetime. We are being totally serious here people, you have to follow your dreams or what is the point? You get this one life, and you have to make the most of it, and you can't let your dreams get derailed by others who don't understand why you want what you want.  So get out there, write that movie script, build that rocket, start that band, life is so much better when you follow your dreams.

DONUT FRIEND OR FIEND

Having a donut is like celebrating your birthday on any day you want. A miniature birthday cake all to yourself. Go ahead be greedy, you don't have to share, no cutting slices and passing them around. You get it all to yourself, without the fuss of candles and off tune singing. Some presents would be nice, but sacrifices have to be made if you want to celebrate your birthday two, three times a week. And you can't celebrate with any old donut, thou donuts, like pizza, even when they're bad, they're still pretty good, but when they're really good, it's like eating a bit of heaven. A sort of heaven on earth, if you will. Which brings us to the point of this post. Donut Friend.

Donut Friend, is the heavenly vision of Mark Trombino. You're probably asking yourself, "Where do I know that name from?". Well, Mark is a record producer, worked with a couple of little bands like Drive Like Jehu, Jimmy Eat World, and Blink-182. So he knows music, but more importantly does he know donuts? And with one look at the menu, it's pretty clear he does.

Now that you've read the ingredients, you've probably come to the same conclusion that we did. These donuts are practically health bars with all those fresh fruits. Well, now is the time to gas up the car, fill out the vacation card, no show at school, pack up your tent and plan a road trip, because Donut Friend opens next month and you're going to want to get there at least a few days early to claim your spot in line, behind us naturally.

HI MY NAME IS...

You are going to meet lots of famous people through our Hi My Name Is series. But we want to put the spotlight on some of you that are just as interesting but relatively unknown. Let's meet Anthony Proetta

What is your Job Title?

Locomotive engineer.

How long have you been driving the trains?

Never ask an engineer if he drives a train, it's almost as bad as calling him or her a conductor. We don't drive trains!! We run them, or operate the equipment. It's not an automobile, there is no steering wheel, ha ha! Regardless, I have been an engineer for 5 years.

What made you want to be a conductor?

Ha ha!! Engineer you mean??

Everyone loves trains. Whether you're a child or an adult, at some point you've admired a train. I have always admired trains. I never imagined I'd ever be lucky enough to run them. I worked my way up, starting as a track worker, building and repairing the rail road tracks, then eventually with a good reputation, I was accepted into the position of "Engineer". Something I've always wanted to do. And I can honestly say, I love my job.

Craziest thing that's gone down on your train.

The craziest things mostly happen on holidays like St. Patty's day, Cinco De Mayo, etc, when there are drinks and drugs being consumed. Htuge crowds of intoxicated people are all taking the trains to go party or parade. Some times the crowds get along and crowd surf each other down the aisles until the police come. Or they don't get along and fight in the aisles until the police come. So, eventually the police are called. It's pandemonium.

The best story I have is when a friend of ours, a well-known frequent passenger of our trains, who happens to be a drag queen, was getting harassed by three gang kids. He beat up one of the gang kids while wearing high heels. They never bothered him again.

Famous people on your train?

Yes, all the time. Sometimes it's hard to recognize them. Sometimes not. I see a lot of athletes. Met Mark Messier of the NY Rangers hockey team, friendly guy.  But this is New York, and in New York no one cares about celebrities.

I actually moved a train around that was used while they filmed a movie that should be coming out this year called "Blood Ties". It was an interesting experience. The actors involved included Billy Crudup, Zoe Saldana and Clive Owen. No big deal.

Weird creatures in the tunnels?

Rats the size of cats. Roaches the size of mice. And the occasional houseless person looking for a nap. I'm usually willing to share my food with all of them.

Any train facts that are cool to know?

A single train car can hold about a hundred people per car on our trains, that means on an 8 car train the engineer and conductor are responsible for getting about 1,000 people to their destination safely in a single trip!

Thank you Anthony, for sharing your stories and insight in what it's like to live in your world. Think you have what it takes to be a person of interest on HMNI? Hit us up on our FB page about who you are and what you do. Maybe you can be the next "Hi My Name is" profile.
